With less than a month until kick-off, here's a quick recap for all you newbies and reminder for the returning WAAM Team:

Hi, fellow activists!

I'm Maggie, co-founder and the director of the We Are America March (WAAM). WAAM is grassroots, volunteer-powered, and millennial-led; we are nonpartisan and not-for-profit, and we want you to march 160 miles with us this April 11-25th.

Last September, we organized a 160-mile peaceful protest march from Philadelphia to Washington, DC. 50 marchers from all over the country carried a copy of the Constitution transcribed by children also from all over the country. In September, we worked with 40 different community groups to promote, support and plan events each night of the trip. From a flotilla across the Susquehanna River, to teach-ins centered on the dangers of Christian Nationalism and Immigration Law, to BBQs and campfire concerts, we worked with local communities to identify what was important to their neighbors.

From April 11-25th, we will be making the pilgrimage again, and this time we have support for 100 marchers. A crucial aspect of the march is that no one pays to march. The time and physical sacrifice already act as barriers to participation for many people, so the march provides food, housing (mostly in churches), safety teams and first aid to all of our marchers. We strive to have a community as diverse as our country.

Our core demand is simple: Follow the Constitution!  (The document is, after all, a blueprint for how to live in community.) Don't get me wrong; everyone marching has specific demands of our politicians, but our shared demand is directed towards our fellow Americans. When our government stops taking care of us, we have a responsibility to care for and protect each other.

We like to say that WAAM operates on three tiers: Nationally by driving change through high-visibility public demonstrations. Regionally, by threading together communities from urban centers like Baltimore to rural areas like Cecil County. And individually by empowering each other to take on leadership roles in our own backyards. We believe this last tier is the most important. To create real, lasting, nation-wide change, it must first happen in our neighborhoods, community centers, churches and homes.
